Sports Makers Programme

Jan 25, 2012   //   by WiganSDU   //   Front Page, News, Wigan Borough Sports Council, Wigan Sports Development  //  No Comments

A t the end of February Wigan Sports Development will be launching the national Sports Makers programme throughout Wigan & Leigh. This is your chance to make more sport happen in your local community.

What Are Sports Makers?

Sports Makers are simply people who make sport happen in their local communities. Sports Makers activities could be something as simple as organising a game of five a side football with a group of friends or organising a community fun run.

How to become a Sports Maker

It is easy to become a Sports Maker and the programme is open to anyone over the age of 16. It is simply a case of creating a profile on the Sports Makers website and then logging a minimum of 10 hours volunteering. Each Sports Maker must also attend an inspirational induction workshop the dates and locations of which are below.

For further information visit the Sports Makers website at http://www.sportmakers.co.uk/

Induction Workshops

Robin Park Arena – Tuesday 28th Feb, 7pm – 9pm.

Leigh Harriers Athletics Club – Wednesday 7th March, 7pm – 9pm.

Places can be booked through the Sports Makers website as above. If you have any issues contact us on 01942 488495.

Further benefits to getting involved……….

Coach Funding

We will have 50% funding for 50 registered Sports Makers aged 16-24 to attend an NGB level 1 or 2 qualification. This will be the only funding available to support coaches throughout the borough in 2012 so it is a massive incentive for coaches/volunteers to register as Sports Makers.

Event Funding

We will also have 20 instalments of £400 available to Sports Makers (again aged 16-24) looking to organise events within their local communities. There is a bit of flexibility here i.e. the Sports Maker may be applying on behalf of their club who will be running the event. As long as the Sports Maker is someway involved in the organisation of the event then there is no problem. Therefore, this is a good way for clubs to bring in additional funds for their club.

Please be aware that neither of the funding streams will be available until both the induction workshops have taken place as above. However, application forms will be available on request or via this page from January for anyone wishing to apply early.

Wigan Back to Netball Tournament Report

Back to Netball Tournament January 2012

On Saturday 14th January, Wigan Sports Development hosted the 4th ‘Back to Netball’ Tournament at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre.  The event could be entered by players who currently attend ‘Back to Netball’ sessions and by women of all ages regardless of previous experience or ability.

The tournament attracted a record number of 8 teams with players ranging from 16-50 years old.  The teams were organised into 2 groups of 4, with the top 2 making it through to the semi-finals.  The bottom 2 teams from each group also went through to a plate competition to ensure all teams played the same amount of games.

In the plate semi finals, Shooting Stars and Tyldesley Flames defeated Delphside and Wirral Gems to contest the game for 5th place with Tyldesley Flames claiming a narrow victory.

Jimmy Chooters and the Old Timers topped the groups, with Tyldesley Storm and The Jets finishing runners up.  The semi finals were of a very high standard with the tournament’s unbeaten teams Old Timers and Jimmy Chooters impressive in making it through to the final.  In the 3rd/4th place play off, Tyldesley Storm claimed victory over The Jets.  At half time in the final, the scores were level at 7-7, but an inspired spell in the second half by the Old Timers opened up a lead that Jimmy Chooters never recovered from and the game finished 18-11.  Congratulations Old Timers!

The tournament was the most successful one to date with the next one to be held in April/May.  Hopefully this will attract even more teams and continue to highlight the success of the ‘Back to Netball’ programme.

GRANTS of up to £2,000 are available to help Wigan and Leigh folk organise their own community events celebrating the 2012 London Olympics.

But the deadline for applications is fast approaching!

Wigan’s Cultural Partnership is supporting the cultural element of London 2012 by running a one-off grant scheme for cultural community organisations including youth groups, schools, churches and sports groups.

To celebrate and inspire people locally, grants up to the sum of £2,000 are available to develop and hold events in your local community and it doesn’t just have to be around sport.

They can be themed around play, heritage, the environment, dance, music, theatre, visual arts, film and digital innovation – celebrating the cultural elements of the Olympics.  The events will need to take place between February 2012 and September 2012 which is the closing date of the 2012 Paralympics

Gill David, Interim Chairperson of the Cultural Partnership, said: “This is about encouraging, promoting and enjoying what will be a ‘once in a lifetime event’.
“We want communities across the borough to come up with as many fantastic and fun ways they can think of to enjoy the spirit of London 2012.”

If your group has the ideas, innovation, motivation and team spirit then contact 01942 486 256 or email grantapplications@wigan.gov.uk to apply for your grant application pack.

The closing date for applications is Monday 30 January 2012.  The decision making panel will then meet to decide where the grant money will be allocated

The Cultural Partnership is made up of local representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Gill David added: “The Cultural Partnership is committed to improving the lives of individuals and communities across the borough, increasing the accessibility of cultural resources and developing recreational opportunities reflective of people’s needs.
“London 2012 represents a very clear way to celebrate and create opportunities for communities across our borough.”
