Midnight Football Leagues
Wigan Sports Development run 2 successful football leagues each year based on the Basketball Midnight Leagues that originated in the US. Midnight Leagues encourage some of the most at risk young people in the Borough to engage in a more positive activity in the evenings through organised football leagues at community facilities.
Held from January through to March at Leigh Sports Village and Robin Park Arena the project is designed to provide a diversionary activity for young people aged 12-19 years on a Friday night, keeping potentially bored yet talented teenagers off the streets. Since 2007, the Midnight Leagues have engaged with over 800 young people – over 300 each week with many coming back year after year. The leagues have been supported by partners including Wigan and Leigh Housing, Wigan Parks Activities and Regeneration Team, Youth Workers and Police Community Support Officers. Wigan Athletic Football Club contribute tickets to a number of home Premier League fixtures as a reward and recognition scheme for the young people currently attending the Midnight Leagues.
